Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar Plant Inaugurates India’s Largest In‑Plant Rail Cargo Terminal

Date:

Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing hub in Manesar has been equipped with India’s largest in-plant railway cargo terminal, recently inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. As part of the first phase of the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC), the facility connects directly with Northern Railway’s Patli link via a 6.9 km spur line, enabling seamless access to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.

Spanning 46 acres, the terminal includes four full-length loading tracks and escape lines, with the capacity to handle 450,000 vehicles annually. The first rake, loaded with 276 cars, departed for Nagpur, symbolizing a major step toward reducing road dependence in logistics.

According to Maruti Suzuki’s CEO, the terminal will contribute significantly to sustainability, cutting 175,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and saving around 60 million litres of fuel per year once fully operational. The company aims to raise the share of vehicles transported by rail to 35% by FY 2030–31 as part of its green logistics strategy.

This development not only reduces pressure on NH‑8 by eliminating an estimated 65,000 truck trips annually but also reinforces India’s commitment to expanding multimodal transport under the PM GatiShakti initiative.
