Adani Power and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have entered into an agreement to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project, marking another major step in strengthening energy cooperation between India and Bhutan.
Construction of the hydropower project is expected to begin in early 2027, with commissioning planned within six years of the start of construction. The project will operate under a 49:51 equity partnership, with Adani Power holding 49% and DGPC owning 51%.
The project will follow a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model and will be supported by a 30-year concession period from the start of commercial operations.
Chamkharchhu-I is the second major hydropower collaboration between the two companies, following the proposed 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. It is also part of a broader 5,000 MW hydropower memorandum between the Adani Group and Bhutan.
The project is expected to strengthen regional energy security, particularly during Bhutan’s winter months when power availability can be constrained. It will also support clean energy development and enable surplus electricity to be exported to India, contributing to the wider green energy transition across South Asia.
