India’s 26% Green Steel Move

Date:

India is moving steadily toward a cleaner and more responsible industrial future. A recent study by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) highlights how a simple policy step can bring a big change. The report suggests that if 26% green steel is used in government projects, it could create demand for nearly 16 million tonnes of green steel every year by 2030.

Steel is the backbone of modern infrastructure. It is widely used in roads, railways, housing, bridges and metro systems. Large public infrastructure projects require huge quantities of steel to support India’s growing cities and expanding transport networks. If a portion of this demand shifts toward certified green steel, the country can make its development more sustainable while continuing to build strong infrastructure.

The encouraging part is that the industry appears ready for this transition. Experts believe that steel manufacturers are preparing themselves to supply greener alternatives as the demand for sustainable materials increases. A clear policy direction can further accelerate this progress and encourage innovation within the sector.

Another important aspect is that the cost impact is expected to remain limited. The use of green steel may increase project expenses only slightly, while the environmental benefits can be significant. Cleaner production methods can help reduce emissions and support India’s broader climate goals.

India is already investing heavily in infrastructure and urban growth. By promoting the use of greener materials, the country has the opportunity to align development with environmental responsibility.

The proposed green steel mandate therefore represents more than just a policy idea. It reflects a forward-looking vision that supports sustainable industry, encourages innovation and strengthens India’s journey toward responsible and resilient infrastructure development.
