Telangana to Build EV Depots for 2,800 Electric Buses in Hyderabad

Date:

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) is taking a major step towards sustainable urban transport by planning to build dedicated EV depots for 2,800 electric buses in Hyderabad. These depots will be equipped with advanced charging stations and high-tension power connections, ensuring smooth operations for the state’s growing fleet of e-buses. Each depot will require an estimated investment of ₹10 crore, taking the total infrastructure cost to around ₹392 crore.

Currently, TSRTC operates 265 electric buses and plans to add 275 more in the coming months as part of its green mobility expansion. To support this ambitious initiative, the state is introducing a nominal green fee of ₹5–10 per bus ticket, which is expected to generate nearly ₹110 crore annually. However, since almost 75% of city bus passengers, mainly women under the Mahalakshmi scheme, travel for free, the government will shoulder a significant share of the cost.

This project also aims to gradually replace the existing 2,926 diesel buses that emit approximately 2.15 kilograms of carbon dioxide daily per vehicle. The introduction of e-buses and EV depots will help reduce air pollution, noise and operating costs while improving commuter comfort.

Charging facilities have already been installed at several depots, including JBS, Cantonment, HCU and Miyapur-2, marking the beginning of Telangana’s long-term transition toward a fully electric public transport ecosystem. The initiative reinforces the state’s strong commitment to clean energy, climate action and sustainable mobility in Hyderabad.
