Freight Train to Kashmir Brings Down Cement Prices

Date:

The introduction of a freight train service to Kashmir has transformed the region’s cement supply chain, bringing down prices and intensifying market competition. With direct rail connectivity to Srinagar’s Budgam terminal, manufacturers and traders can now transport cement more efficiently and at lower costs compared to the earlier road-only route over the Banihal highway.

Previously, cement movement by trucks through mountainous terrain led to high logistics costs, unpredictable delays and limited supplier competition. The new rail link has significantly reduced these barriers, enabling companies to deliver cement faster and more reliably. This change has already led to a noticeable drop in cement prices across the Valley, benefiting builders, contractors and consumers alike.

The improved accessibility is also encouraging more suppliers to enter the Kashmir market, enhancing competition and ensuring better product quality and service standards. The shift from road to rail not only stabilizes prices but also ensures a consistent supply of essential construction materials — a major boost for the region’s ongoing infrastructure and housing development.

Overall, the freight train service marks a key milestone for Jammu and Kashmir’s economy. By reducing transport costs, improving supply chains and fostering fair competition, it is paving the way for sustained construction growth and market efficiency in the region.
