New Hydrogen Tank Design Could Transform Heavy Construction Machinery

Date:

HÖRMANN is leading a development project focused on an innovative wheel-integrated hydrogen tank system for construction machinery, marking another step toward cleaner power solutions for heavy-duty off-road equipment. The project explores how hydrogen storage can be incorporated directly into the wheel area of construction machines while maintaining the performance and functionality required in demanding operating environments.

The approach is particularly significant because construction equipment requires high energy density, durability and efficient use of limited installation space. Integrating the hydrogen storage system into the wheel could offer manufacturers new possibilities for packaging fuel systems while supporting the transition toward low-emission machinery.

Hydrogen is increasingly being considered for heavy construction and industrial applications where battery-electric solutions can face challenges related to operating time, charging requirements and machine weight.

The HÖRMANN-led initiative also highlights the growing role of composite materials and advanced tank technologies in hydrogen mobility. Lightweight composite structures can help reduce system weight while enabling the storage of hydrogen at the pressures required for mobile applications.

As construction companies and equipment manufacturers face increasing pressure to reduce emissions, technologies such as hydrogen fuel systems could become an important part of the industry’s future powertrain mix. The project demonstrates how innovative component integration may help bring hydrogen-powered construction machinery closer to commercial application.
