A former railway freight yard in Shenzhen, China, has been redeveloped into the Pinghunan Integrated Logistics Hub, an advanced logistics park built directly above an active railway line. The innovative project maximises land use by retaining rail operations at ground level while creating modern warehousing and logistics infrastructure above the tracks.
The large-scale development spans around 1.11 million square metres and involves an investment of approximately 9.04 billion yuan. It features 11 smart logistics warehouses supported by intelligent sorting systems, unmanned warehousing technology, and digital management solutions designed to improve operational efficiency. The project also preserves more than 20 hectares of land through its vertical construction approach.
To ensure precision during construction, engineers adopted Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology, enabling real-time monitoring of steel component installation. The system automatically flags deviations exceeding three millimetres, contributing to a 100% qualification rate for installed steel structures.
Once operational, the logistics hub is expected to handle approximately 1.4 million TEUs of sea-rail intermodal cargo annually. It is projected to improve regional logistics efficiency by 30% while reducing logistics costs by 20%, strengthening Shenzhen’s position as a major global logistics and multimodal transport hub.
