KPI Green Energy has received three notifications of award from NTPC for setting up a plasma gasification-based green hydrogen project, marking a significant step in India’s clean energy transition. The project will be implemented at NTPC’s NETRA facility in Greater Noida and carries a combined contract value of ₹128.49 crore.
Designed to produce one tonne of green hydrogen per day, the facility will use municipal solid waste-refuse derived fuel (MSW-RDF) along with agricultural residues as feedstock. The project will deploy plasma gasification, an advanced waste-to-energy process that converts waste materials into synthesis gas. This syngas can then be refined to generate clean hydrogen, offering a low-emission alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based hydrogen production.
Beyond hydrogen generation, the initiative is expected to support efficient waste handling by diverting municipal and farm waste from landfills and open burning. The dual benefit of clean fuel production and waste reduction aligns with national priorities on sustainability and circular economy practices.
For NTPC, the project reinforces its expanding focus on new-age energy solutions and decarbonisation pathways. For KPI Green Energy, the awards strengthen its presence in emerging green hydrogen technologies, positioning the company within a fast-evolving segment of India’s renewable energy landscape. Once commissioned, the project is expected to serve as a model for integrating waste management with clean fuel production.
