Telangana Unveils Roadmap for a Smart, Green Transport Future

Date:

Telangana has unveiled a forward-looking roadmap to build a smart and green transport ecosystem, signalling a major shift toward sustainable mobility in the state. Announced by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, the initiative focuses on accelerating electric vehicle adoption, strengthening road safety systems and modernizing transport infrastructure across all districts.

A key element of the roadmap is the vehicle-scrappage policy, which offers incentives such as green-tax waivers and reductions in pending penalties for citizens who scrap old vehicles and replace them with new ones. This step aims to reduce pollution, curb unsafe vehicles on roads and encourage the transition to cleaner mobility options.

The state is also establishing 37 Automated Testing Stations, one in each district, along with additional facilities in the Hyderabad region. These centres will ensure accurate emission checks, scientific fitness testing and overall improvement in transport safety standards. The first phase, covering 15 stations, has already begun the tendering process with substantial government funding allocated.

To boost electric vehicle usage, Telangana has mandated that all government departments and corporations procure or lease at least 25% electric vehicles every year. This will stimulate EV demand, strengthen the charging ecosystem and push the state toward long-term sustainability.

With plans to expand public EV charging, electrify public transport, build battery recycling systems and integrate digital monitoring tools, Telangana is positioning itself as a leader in clean mobility and climate-conscious urban planning.
