India has taken a significant step toward creating more inclusive and universally accessible infrastructure with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launching the country’s first-ever Purple Building Certification Scheme. The initiative aims to ensure that public and private buildings are designed to be accessible for people of all abilities, marking a transformative shift in India’s approach to infrastructure development.
The certification—developed in partnership with accessibility experts and industry bodies—will evaluate buildings based on parameters such as barrier-free entry, accessible washrooms, ramps, tactile pathways, emergency evacuation systems, and inclusive design standards. Buildings that meet these benchmarks will receive Purple Certification, signalling their commitment to inclusivity and universal design.
Gadkari emphasized that infrastructure must serve every citizen, including persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and individuals with temporary mobility challenges. The scheme is expected to encourage developers, architects, and government agencies to prioritise accessibility from the planning stage itself.
Industry analysts believe the initiative will set new design standards for India’s urban development, influencing upcoming projects in transport hubs, commercial buildings, educational institutions, and residential complexes. The Purple Building Certification is seen as a crucial step in creating an India where infrastructure empowers all citizens—ensuring dignity, safety, and equal opportunity.
