The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of the four-lane, access-controlled Barabanki–Bahraich section of National Highway-927, a major infrastructure project expected to significantly strengthen trade and connectivity between India and Nepal. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that the highway will improve access to the strategically important Rupaidiha Land Port and Nepalgunj, one of the busiest cross-border trade gateways between the two countries.
The upgraded corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich by nearly 50%, bringing the journey down from around 150 minutes to approximately 75 minutes. Improved road conditions and higher travel speeds will enhance the movement of goods, reduce transportation costs and minimize spoilage of perishable products such as fruits, vegetables and dairy items.
The project is also expected to benefit farmers, traders, transporters and local businesses by enabling faster and more efficient logistics. As India is Nepal’s largest trading partner, better road connectivity will further strengthen economic cooperation while supporting regional development in Uttar Pradesh.
Beyond trade, the new highway is expected to improve connectivity for residents, promote tourism, create employment during construction and enhance access to markets and essential services. Once completed, the Barabanki–Bahraich Highway will emerge as a vital transport corridor, supporting economic growth and reinforcing the long-standing partnership between India and Nepal.
