The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a key carriageway widening project near Subroto Park Air Force Station in New Delhi, designed to ease traffic flow toward Gurugram via the route from Dhaula Kuan to the airport. Presently, the left-hand side of the carriageway (heading to Gurugram) narrows from four lanes to just two near the start of the Parade Road under-pass, where a metro pillar encroaches on the road width. To address this bottleneck, NHAI is expanding this segment from two lanes to four lanes.
The scheme involves the relocation of a drain, the peripheral road and part of the boundary wall of the Air Force Station to carve out the required space for extra lanes. A new foot-over-bridge is also planned near the Subroto Park station at the start of the RTR fly-over to improve pedestrian safety. In addition, an upgraded drainage system will help handle surface water effectively. Environmental and traffic management measures form part of the plan: trees will be transplanted, anti-smoke guns and water-sprinklers used to control dust and pollution, while traffic marshals, tow-away cranes and safety cones will manage vehicular flow during works.
Expected to be completed within six months, the project is poised to significantly reduce congestion on this important corridor, enhance connectivity between Dhaula Kuan, the Delhi airport and Gurugram and improve the travel experience for daily commuters.
