Singapore has launched a new programme to help start-ups test embodied artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in real-world construction environments, supporting innovation and automation across the building industry.
Named Startup CoLab EAI, the initiative brings together Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), and The GEAR by Kajima. The programme was announced by Minister of State Alvin Tan at the Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology (SWITCH) event on October 28, 2026.
Embodied AI combines artificial intelligence with machines capable of responding to changing surroundings. Potential applications in construction include material handling, façade installation and surface finishing.
Participating start-ups will receive support in identifying suitable construction applications and adapting their technologies to Singapore’s operational requirements. They will be able to test their solutions in simulated environments, at The GEAR’s facilities and on live construction sites. Successful participants may also gain access to potential customers and investors.
The initiative comes as the BCA projects annual construction demand in Singapore to reach $39 billion to $46 billion between 2027 and 2030. Automation is expected to help improve productivity and address manpower challenges.
Kajima will provide access to industry networks, project sites and technical expertise to help refine the technologies. The programme builds on The GEAR’s existing start-up initiative, which has completed 15 proof-of-concept projects since April 2025. Applications are expected to open in early 2027.
