Kerala PWD Approves Preliminary Work for Goshree Parallel Bridge Project in Ernakulam

Date:

The Public Works Department (PWD) of Kerala has granted administrative sanction for preliminary work on the proposed Goshree parallel bridge project in Ernakulam, marking an initial step towards improving traffic movement and road connectivity in the region.

An allocation of Rs 25.08 lakh has been approved for soil investigation, which will help assess ground conditions for the proposed infrastructure. The next stage involves preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR), while construction is expected to begin within six months.

The proposed parallel bridge aims to reduce persistent traffic congestion around Bolgatty Junction, where heavy vehicles converge from four directions, creating significant pressure on existing road infrastructure.

The original Goshree project was conceived as a four-lane transit corridor. However, following environmental protests, the plan was revised, resulting in the construction of two-lane bridges. With traffic volumes expected to rise further after the proposed Munambam–Azhikode bridge becomes operational, urban planning experts and local residents have called for parallel structures alongside the first and third Goshree bridges.

The proposed development is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance regional connectivity and accommodate increasing transportation requirements. It could also create opportunities for construction contractors, engineering consultants, infrastructure suppliers and other businesses associated with road and bridge development.

The project represents an important preliminary step towards addressing Ernakulam’s growing transportation challenges through additional infrastructure capacity.
