NTPC has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with US-based 247Solar to deploy advanced solar thermal technology in India. The project aims to strengthen clean energy generation and support the development of reliable, round-the-clock renewable electricity.
The project will mark the first commercial deployment of 247Solar’s technology at Bhadla Solar Park in Rajasthan, one of India’s prominent solar energy hubs. The location has been selected for its abundant sunshine and convenient grid connectivity, making it suitable for testing the innovative system.
The proposed installation will feature a hybrid system with an approximate capacity of one megawatt. It will combine a modular 247Solar Plant with a capacity of 400 kilowatts and several hundred kilowatts of photovoltaic (PV) capacity.
By integrating solar thermal technology with conventional solar PV generation, the project seeks to explore ways to improve the reliability and availability of renewable electricity. Unlike conventional solar PV systems, which depend directly on sunlight and typically require storage or other support to supply power after sunset, solar thermal technology can offer additional flexibility through thermal energy storage, depending on the system design.
The initiative will enable NTPC to assess the technology’s commercial potential and its ability to complement existing solar power generation while reducing dependence on coal-based electricity.
The project represents another step towards diversifying India’s renewable energy portfolio and advancing cleaner power generation solutions.
