New Town, Kolkata’s burgeoning urban hub, is grappling with a growing menace: construction materials encroaching on its roadways. With rapid infrastructure development underway, builders and contractors have increasingly resorted to dumping sand, bricks, and other materials on public roads, significantly hampering traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
Key thoroughfares, including Action Area I and II, have been particularly affected, causing inconvenience to commuters and raising concerns among residents. The clutter not only reduces road space but also poses hazards, especially during peak hours and inclement weather.
Local civic authorities have faced criticism for their failure to curb these practices. While fines are imposed sporadically, enforcement remains inconsistent. Residents argue that stricter penalties and better monitoring are urgently needed to prevent public spaces from being misused.
The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has pledged to address the issue, with plans to introduce designated storage zones for construction materials. However, until these measures are implemented, the city’s roads remain compromised, highlighting the need for immediate action to balance urban development with civic order.
