Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal asking Indians to reduce gold purchases and fuel consumption may sound economically responsible, but it overlooks a deeper reality: Indians are not buying gold or using fuel recklessly. They are responding to insecurity, inflation and uncertainty.
In India, gold is not merely an investment or luxury asset. For millions of families, it represents financial security, emergency liquidity and protection against unpredictable times. Generations have relied on gold because institutional safety nets remain limited. Asking citizens to avoid gold purchases without addressing economic anxieties misses the cultural and financial role gold plays in Indian society.
The same applies to fuel. Indians already face high fuel costs relative to income levels, while fuel taxes continue to remain a major source of government revenue. For the average citizen, fuel consumption is not excess, it is a necessity tied to livelihood, transport and survival.
The larger concern is timing. At a time when the country faces pressure from stagnant wages, rising living costs, youth unemployment, household debt and declining savings, such public appeals risk appearing symbolic rather than solution-oriented. They create the impression that economic strain is being linked to citizen behavior instead of structural issues.
Historically, governments make such appeals during periods of pressure on imports, trade deficits, currency stability, or foreign reserves. But long-term solutions cannot emerge from moral messaging alone. They require stronger job creation, better public transport, lower dependence on imported energy and greater financial confidence among citizens.
Ironically, rising gold purchases may themselves reflect declining trust in economic stability. Citizens move toward gold not because they are optimistic, but because they are uncertain about the future.
Until economic confidence improves at the ground level, appeals for restraint may increasingly sound disconnected from everyday realities.
