India’s energy sector is steadily moving towards cleaner and more efficient systems and the recent growth in environment-friendly coal transportation is a strong sign of this progress. In FY25, Coal India Limited reported a 34 percent rise in eco-friendly coal movement, reaching 102.5 million tonnes through modern First Mile Connectivity projects connected to the railway network. This development shows that even in traditional industries, the use of better technology can reduce environmental impact while improving overall efficiency.
The shift towards mechanised loading systems and conveyor-based transport has reduced the need for road movement of coal. Earlier, large-scale truck transport often led to dust, noise, fuel consumption and traffic congestion near mining areas. With automated handling and direct railway loading, coal can now be moved in a cleaner, faster and more organised manner. This not only protects the environment but also ensures smoother supply to power plants and industries that depend on coal for daily operations.
For a growing country like India, coal still remains an important source of energy. While renewable energy is expanding at a fast pace, thermal power continues to support the nation’s electricity demand. Because of this, improving the way coal is transported becomes just as important as improving the way it is produced.
Coal India’s continued focus on expanding these modern transport systems reflects a balanced approach towards development. It shows that economic growth and environmental responsibility can move together, creating a more sustainable future without slowing down the country’s progress.
