A recent disclosure by the government has highlighted a major compliance issue on Indian roads. According to data shared in the Rajya Sabha, nearly 44% of vehicles currently operating in India do not have valid insurance, even though third-party motor insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The data, compiled from the VAHAN vehicle database, considered vehicles with valid registration and fitness status. The findings indicate that a significant number of vehicle owners are either unaware of the legal requirement or fail to renew their insurance policies on time.
Vehicle insurance plays a crucial role in protecting both drivers and accident victims from financial losses. In the event of an accident, insurance ensures that compensation for damages or injuries can be provided through the insurer. However, when an uninsured vehicle is involved in an accident, it becomes more difficult for victims to receive compensation, often leading to legal and financial complications.
To address such situations, the government has created the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, which provides financial assistance in cases involving uninsured vehicles and hit-and-run accidents. This fund is meant to ensure that victims are not left without support when accidents occur.
Experts suggest that weak enforcement, lack of awareness and delays in insurance renewals contribute to the high number of uninsured vehicles. Improving digital verification systems, strengthening enforcement and increasing public awareness could help reduce this gap.
Ensuring that every vehicle on the road has valid insurance is not just a legal obligation but also a critical step toward improving road safety and protecting citizens.
