Marcuise N Marak, Minister-in-Charge of Public Health Engineering in Meghalaya, has reviewed the progress of the New Shillong Water Supply Project, a key infrastructure initiative designed to ensure a sustainable drinking water supply for the rapidly expanding New Shillong Township and 32 surrounding villages.
The project is seen as critical to supporting future urban growth while strengthening long-term water security in the state capital region. During an on-site inspection at Nongkhali village, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of execution, noting that the project has moved steadily forward despite initial challenges.
As per the latest update, civil works have reached around 30 percent completion, while procurement of essential components—including pipes, pumps, and machinery—has progressed to nearly 90 percent. Early delays were attributed to land acquisition hurdles and the difficult terrain, particularly at the steep, gorge-like site identified for the dam.
Reaffirming confidence in the project timeline, the Minister stated that dam construction is expected to commence shortly. He added that most foundational work is nearing completion, with excavation and land clearing almost finished. Construction of the dam is likely to begin within the next ten days, marking a significant milestone for the project.
