SCCL Construction Project to Add Major Thermal and Green Power Capacity in Odisha

Date:

The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is set to move ahead with a major construction project in Odisha following a proposed agreement with the state’s Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation on December 18. The planned initiative will focus on developing a combination of thermal and renewable energy facilities, adding close to 4,900 MW to Odisha’s power generation capacity.

As per details shared by SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N. Balram, the company plans to construct a high-capacity thermal power station comprising three units of 800 MW each near the Naini coal block. The facility is designed to be supported by coal sourced from the nearby block, helping ensure smooth operations and consistent electricity output.

Alongside the thermal project, SCCL is also preparing to undertake several green energy construction works across the state. These include large ground-mounted solar plants, floating solar installations on reservoirs, wind energy projects, and pumped storage systems. Together, these renewable initiatives are expected to account for about 2,500 MW of capacity.

The proposed construction projects underline SCCL’s approach of strengthening conventional power assets while steadily expanding into clean energy. For Odisha, the developments are expected to support future industrial demand, improve energy reliability, and contribute to a more diverse and resilient power ecosystem.
