India has supplied 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, further strengthening energy cooperation between the two neighbouring nations. The diesel consignment was transported from Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam and is being delivered to Bangladesh’s Parbatipur depot in Dinajpur district through the cross-border pipeline.
The Friendship Pipeline, inaugurated in 2023, has emerged as a critical infrastructure project that enables faster, more reliable and cost-effective transportation of fuel compared to the earlier rail-based system. Spanning approximately 131 kilometres, the pipeline connects India’s fuel distribution network with northern Bangladesh, helping ensure uninterrupted energy supplies.
The current diesel shipment is part of a long-term bilateral agreement under which India supplies around 180,000 metric tonnes of diesel annually to Bangladesh. Energy officials in Bangladesh have highlighted the importance of the supply in supporting agriculture, transportation and power generation activities, particularly in the country’s northern regions.
The delivery comes at a time when global energy markets continue to face uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions and disruptions in international supply chains. By leveraging the Friendship Pipeline, both countries are enhancing regional energy security and strengthening economic cooperation. The project stands as a symbol of growing India-Bangladesh relations and demonstrates the value of cross-border infrastructure in meeting the region’s evolving energy needs.
