PM Modi Inaugurates India-Funded Railway Projects in Sri Lanka

Date:

On April 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake jointly inaugurated key India-assisted railway infrastructure projects in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. These initiatives mark a new chapter in the growing bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

One of the main highlights was the inauguration of the renovated Maho-Omanthai railway line, stretching 128 km. This critical upgrade, financed through an Indian Line of Credit worth USD 91.27 million, will significantly improve travel efficiency and boost regional connectivity in Sri Lanka’s northern region.

Additionally, the leaders launched the construction of a new state-of-the-art signaling system on the Maho-Anuradhapura route. Supported by an Indian grant of USD 14.89 million, this project aims to enhance railway safety and operational capacity.

These developments are expected to promote economic growth by streamlining the movement of passengers and freight. More importantly, they reflect India’s commitment to supporting sustainable infrastructure and development in Sri Lanka, reinforcing the enduring friendship between the two nations.
