Rajasthan Prepares DPR for Narmada Water Storage Project to Boost Drinking Water and Irrigation

Date:

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has announced that the state government is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for a scheme to store surplus Narmada River water during the monsoon season.

The proposed project aims to improve drinking water supply and irrigation facilities in the state’s water-scarce regions, especially western Rajasthan. These areas have long faced water shortages, and storing excess monsoon flows could help ensure more dependable availability for households and farmers through the drier months.

The initiative seeks to make better use of the surplus water allocated to Rajasthan under the 1979 award of the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal. By capturing water that would otherwise go unused, the state hopes to maximise the benefit of its share and reduce pressure on its limited water resources.

CM Sharma shared the update while virtually addressing the 15th meeting of the Narmada Control Authority Review Committee, chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil.

The meeting reviewed cooperation among the four Narmada basin states, namely Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, on the utilisation of the river’s water. Coordination among these states is key to the fair and efficient sharing of Narmada water resources.
