The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is set to strengthen its premium intercity bus services with the introduction of 200 new air-conditioned Volvo buses across the state. The move is aimed at improving passenger comfort and offering a stronger public transport option for long-distance travellers.
According to the plan, the new fleet will include 170 seating coaches and 30 sleeper coaches. The buses are expected to primarily operate on routes longer than 250 kilometres. The seating coaches will have 45 seats and will cater mainly to daytime journeys, while the sleeper buses will offer 30 to 45 berths for overnight travel.
The initiative also includes improvements to the ticket-booking experience. Passengers will be able to access schedules and book tickets through MSRTC’s digital platform, with integration planned with private travel-booking platforms.
MSRTC also plans to work with specialised hospitality agencies to manage onboard passenger assistance, amenities and cleanliness.
The expansion is part of the corporation’s broader effort to modernise its fleet and strengthen premium intercity connectivity across Maharashtra. Earlier plans have also identified routes connecting cities such as Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur, Nagpur and Solapur for expanded Shivneri services.
