The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is making steady progress on the ₹716 crore Dehradun Bypass project, with nearly 44% of the construction already completed. The 12-kilometre greenfield, four-lane access-controlled highway is expected to be operational by April 2027 and will play a key role in easing traffic congestion while improving regional connectivity across Uttarakhand and neighbouring states.
The bypass will connect Jhajhra with the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor near Asharori Check Post, while linking the Paonta Sahib–Ballupur section of NH-7. Designed as an alternate south-western route, it will divert heavy and transit traffic away from Dehradun city, reducing travel delays, congestion and vehicular pollution.
The project is also expected to improve connectivity to important industrial and commercial centres such as Selaqui, Vikasnagar, Herbertpur and Paonta Sahib. In addition, it will strengthen road links with Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, while offering better access to popular tourist destinations like Mussoorie.
Sustainability has been integrated into the project’s design. The highway features a reduced right-of-way to minimise tree cutting, regulated speed limits through forest stretches and dedicated wildlife protection measures, including a 350-metre vehicular overpass, cattle underpass, bridges, culverts, continuous fencing and wildlife signage.
Once completed, the Dehradun Bypass is expected to significantly improve urban mobility, support economic growth, encourage tourism and provide a safer, faster and more sustainable transportation corridor for the region.
