Tricity Metro Project Stalled: New Committee to Re-Evaluate Financial Viability

Date:

The much-anticipated Chandigarh Tricity Metro project faces fresh delays as a newly-formed committee is set to reassess its financial feasibility. Despite mounting demand for improved public transport in the Chandigarh region, which includes Mohali and Panchkula, the project has repeatedly encountered roadblocks. The latest setback is due to the creation of a high-level committee tasked with examining the economic practicality of the metro proposal, following concerns over budget allocation and long-term cost efficiency.

The Tricity Metro, envisioned to alleviate growing traffic congestion and reduce pollution, has been in development discussions for over a decade. However, despite extensive planning, the project’s estimated cost and potential financial burden on local and central governments have raised new concerns. The committee’s findings will determine whether the project can proceed as planned or requires substantial modifications to make it viable.

Local officials and residents alike are eager for a resolution, as the region’s population continues to grow, increasing the urgency for a sustainable transit solution. The final decision on the project’s fate now rests with the committee’s upcoming report, expected to be submitted in early 2024.
