AI Nears ‘Tipping Point’ in Construction as Builders Pilot New Technologies, Survey Shows

Date:

A new industry survey reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly approaching a transformative moment in the construction sector, with a rising number of contractors actively piloting AI tools and recognizing their potential to reshape business operations. The study, conducted by Dodge Construction Network in partnership with CMiC, shows that while full-scale adoption is still developing, industry confidence in AI is steadily growing.

Surveying 235 general and trade contractors across the U.S., the report found that 85% expect AI to reduce time spent on repetitive administrative tasks, while 75% believe AI-powered insights from historical project data will help improve outcomes. Larger firms, in particular, see AI as a strong competitive advantage.

Although enthusiasm is high, companies are proceeding carefully. Nearly half of respondents are currently evaluating AI-driven process changes, and 40% have already set aside budgets for AI adoption, often starting with controlled pilot projects before scaling up.

Challenges remain. More than half of the contractors surveyed cited concerns about data accuracy and security, underscoring a cautious approach toward integrating AI into critical workflows.

Industry analysts note that these trends signal an imminent shift, with AI poised to move from experimental testing to mainstream use across jobsite operations and back-office functions in the near future.
