SRA Identifies 18 New Slum Redevelopment Projects Across Mumbai Metropolitan Region

Date:

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has identified 18 additional slum clusters across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) for redevelopment under Maharashtra’s Slum Cluster Area Redevelopment Scheme. The move marks a significant step towards accelerating urban transformation and improving housing infrastructure across the region.

The expansion follows strong investor interest in the scheme’s pilot redevelopment project in Andheri (West), which has encouraged authorities to widen the scope of the initiative. Under the redevelopment policy, clusters covering a minimum of 50 acres and having more than 51 per cent of their area occupied by slums qualify for inclusion in the scheme.

The redevelopment model adopts a comprehensive planning approach by integrating slum settlements with adjacent non-slum areas, ageing and dilapidated buildings, tenant-occupied structures, vacant plots that are difficult to develop independently and selected private properties. In a notable provision, slums located within Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) I and II areas may also be considered for redevelopment.

The SRA will function as the nodal agency responsible for implementing these large-scale housing and infrastructure projects. Before execution begins, the identified clusters must secure approval from a proposed high-power committee led by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing Department, followed by final clearance from the Maharashtra government.

The initiative is expected to create new redevelopment opportunities, improve living conditions for residents and support planned urban growth across the MMR.
