NFB Supports Government AI Planning Project to Accelerate Construction Approvals

Date:

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) has welcomed the UK Government’s new AI-powered planning project, describing it as a significant step towards modernising the planning system and reducing administrative pressures on local authorities. The initiative is designed to streamline planning processes, improve efficiency and accelerate decision-making across the construction sector.

The government plans to use artificial intelligence tools to assist planning departments in handling large volumes of applications, analysing documents and improving the speed and accuracy of planning assessments. By automating routine tasks, the technology is expected to free up planning officers to focus on more complex applications and strategic development projects.

According to the NFB, the introduction of AI could help address long-standing delays in the planning system, which have often slowed the delivery of housing, infrastructure and commercial developments. Faster approvals are expected to provide greater certainty for developers, investors and construction firms while supporting economic growth.

Industry stakeholders believe the project has the potential to enhance productivity across the built environment sector by reducing paperwork and improving access to planning information. The federation also highlighted the importance of ensuring that AI tools complement, rather than replace, professional expertise within planning departments.

The AI planning project reflects the growing adoption of digital technologies in construction and urban development, supporting the government’s broader objective of creating a more efficient, responsive and future-ready planning framework.
