Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited startups to collaborate on developing a next-generation artificial intelligence system aimed at actively managing and executing metro infrastructure projects. The initiative marks a shift from conventional project monitoring tools toward advanced, agent-based AI capable of reasoning, planning, and taking informed actions across complex construction workflows.
Unlike traditional software that primarily reports delays or risks, the proposed AI platform is expected to predict bottlenecks, optimise resource allocation, and dynamically adjust project schedules in real time. By analysing data from multiple sources such as on-site sensors, drones, progress dashboards, and operational inputs, the system could significantly enhance decision-making and execution efficiency.
DMRC has chosen an innovation-led approach rather than a standard tendering process. Startups with relevant AI capabilities are being encouraged to participate in a competitive selection process, following which shortlisted firms will enter into structured partnerships with DMRC. The development model is expected to involve shared costs and collaborative ownership of outcomes.
The move reflects DMRC’s broader vision of adopting cutting-edge technologies to manage large-scale urban transport projects more effectively. It also positions metro infrastructure as a real-world testbed for Indian startups to deploy advanced AI solutions, potentially setting new benchmarks for project management in public infrastructure.
