Union Minister Inaugurates Fisheries Projects Worth ₹50 Crore in Northeastern Region

Date:

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated and laid the foundation for 50 fisheries projects across the Northeastern Region on January 6, 2025. With a total outlay of ₹50 crore, including ₹38.63 crore in Central contribution, the initiatives aim to boost the region’s fisheries infrastructure, enhance productivity, and create employment opportunities.

In Assam, the highlight is the Integrated Aqua Park in Darrang district, expected to produce 150 metric tonnes of fish annually and create 2,000 jobs. Kamrup district will house a Large Fish Feed Plant with a capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes annually, while hatcheries across various districts will produce 50 million spawn per year.

Manipur will benefit from ice plants and cold storage units in Thoubal and Imphal districts, preserving fish produce and ensuring freshness. Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district will focus on recreational fisheries to attract visitors and create local employment.

Nagaland will see the construction of freshwater finfish hatcheries in Mokokchung and Kiphire districts, producing 21 million fry annually to support aquaculture and tribal livelihoods. Tripura’s projects include ornamental fish rearing units and finfish hatcheries, while Sikkim plans 24 projects featuring Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS), fish kiosks in Gangtok, and ornamental fish rearing units.

These projects promise significant socio-economic growth in the region.
