Expert Opinions Highlight Construction Flaws as Over 10 Buildings Tilt in Kolkata

Date:

Over the past month, more than 10 buildings in Kolkata have been found tilting, raising alarm among residents and authorities. The tilting structures, leaning away from the perpendicular, indicate a growing structural concern in the city. Experts believe that several other buildings may also be affected, with some cases potentially going unnoticed.

Structural engineers and urban planners attribute the issue to a combination of technical failures, administrative negligence, and socio-economic pressures. Poor construction practices, inadequate foundation design, and compromised building materials are key technical factors. Additionally, lax enforcement of building regulations and unauthorized constructions have worsened the situation.

Rapid urbanization and high demand for residential and commercial spaces have led to overcrowding, often pushing developers to bypass safety standards. The city’s aging infrastructure, coupled with soil subsidence in certain areas, further contributes to structural instability.

Authorities have begun inspecting vulnerable buildings and advising residents to evacuate where necessary. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has promised stricter monitoring and action against unauthorized constructions. Meanwhile, expert opinions emphasize the need for comprehensive structural audits, stricter building regulations, and public awareness to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of residents.
