The Central Government has allocated ₹3,320 crore towards the revised cost of completing the Polavaram Irrigation Project, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening irrigation and water security in Andhra Pradesh. The funding is aimed at achieving water storage up to an elevation level of 41.15 metres, which represents the project’s minimum drawdown level and is a crucial milestone for its operational readiness.
The Polavaram Irrigation Project is one of the largest multi-purpose irrigation initiatives in the country and plays a vital role in meeting the water requirements of agriculture, drinking water supply, and regional development. Once operational at the planned storage level, the project is expected to significantly enhance irrigation potential across drought-prone districts, supporting farmers with reliable water availability and improving crop productivity.
In addition to irrigation benefits, the project will contribute to stabilising drinking water supply for both rural and urban populations, reducing dependence on seasonal rainfall and groundwater sources. The revised funding is expected to accelerate construction activities, address pending works, and ensure smoother project execution.
Overall, the allocation reflects the Centre’s focus on completing critical irrigation infrastructure, improving water management, and supporting long-term socio-economic growth in Andhra Pradesh through sustainable and dependable water resources.
