Accelerating India’s Transition to Green Buildings: The Way Forward

Date:

India’s shift towards sustainable and energy-efficient buildings is gaining momentum, but experts believe the pace needs to be accelerated to meet global climate goals. With urbanization on the rise and buildings accounting for nearly 40% of energy consumption, adopting green construction practices is crucial.

To fast-track progress, the government must introduce stronger incentives, such as tax benefits, subsidies, and faster approvals for developers adopting green building standards like IGBC, GRIHA, and LEED. Additionally, enforcing stricter building codes and promoting the use of eco-friendly materials, renewable energy, and smart water management systems can significantly reduce carbon footprints.

Public awareness and industry collaboration are equally important. Encouraging homebuyers and businesses to invest in energy-efficient properties through green home loans and sustainability certifications can drive demand. Meanwhile, real estate developers and architects should integrate climate-responsive designs, efficient waste management, and solar power solutions into new projects.

With a holistic approach involving policymakers, developers, and consumers, India can accelerate its journey towards a greener, more sustainable built environment while enhancing economic and environmental benefits.
