The Government of India is accelerating the adoption of modern farming practices through the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), an initiative designed to make advanced agricultural equipment accessible to farmers across the country.
Since its launch in 2014-15, the scheme has supported the distribution of around 22 lakh farm machines to individual farmers with financial assistance worth approximately ₹9,404 crore. The initiative focuses on increasing farm productivity, reducing dependence on manual labour and improving efficiency in agricultural operations.
Farm mechanisation has become an important step towards building a stronger and more sustainable agricultural sector. Modern equipment helps farmers complete farming activities faster, manage resources effectively and improve overall crop output.
Through SMAM, the government also promotes Custom Hiring Centres, Farm Machinery Banks and High-Tech Hubs, allowing small and marginal farmers to use expensive machinery at affordable costs without the need for ownership.
The programme aims to expand the reach of mechanisation in areas where access to advanced farming technology remains limited. It also encourages training and awareness among farmers to adopt innovative agricultural practices.
With increasing focus on technology-driven farming, initiatives like SMAM are helping Indian farmers become more competitive and future-ready. The government’s continued support for agricultural mechanisation represents a major step towards improving productivity, reducing challenges in farming and strengthening India’s agricultural ecosystem.
