Kerala State Industrial Enterprises Ltd (KSIE), a state government undertaking, has proposed developing an integrated logistics hub on a 10–15-acre parcel at Kattachalkuzhi in Balaramapuram. This initiative aims to enhance freight movement in conjunction with the upcoming Vizhinjam International Seaport. KSIE has submitted its proposal to the Industries Department and is awaiting approval. Once the Coconut Research Institute of Kerala Agricultural University agrees to transfer a portion of its land, KSIE plans to begin site preparation and construction activities.
The selected location is strategically positioned just 4 km from Vizhinjam port, which will significantly reduce transit times for cargo handling. Peelipose Thomas, KSIE Chairman, described the project as a “major development initiative still in its early stages,” indicating that acquiring only part of the university’s land is sufficient for the first phase. In addition, KSIE is evaluating a second 15-acre plot closer to the port, which is currently controlled by the Adani Group under a 110-acre Kinfra allocation. This secondary parcel may be secured at a later stage, depending on negotiations and approvals.
Alongside this logistics hub, KSIE intends to expand cargo operations at Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode airports, thereby creating a cohesive multi-modal logistics network. Industries Department Principal Secretary APM Mohammed Hanish confirmed that the proposal is under active review, with a final decision expected in the coming weeks. This project is poised to strengthen Kerala’s supply chain infrastructure and support regional economic growth.
