Indian Oil’s Panipat Plant: Pioneering India’s Green Hydrogen Future

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is spearheading India’s clean energy transition by constructing the nation’s largest green hydrogen plant at its Panipat Refinery & Petrochemical Complex. Scheduled for completion by December 2027, the facility will produce 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, replacing fossil-derived hydrogen in refinery operations and significantly reducing carbon emissions.

This initiative aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to establish a production capacity of at least five million tonnes per year. By integrating green hydrogen into its processes, IOC anticipates a reduction of approximately 80,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

L&T Energy Green Tech has been awarded the contract to construct the plant, marking IOC’s first significant venture into green hydrogen production. The project is part of IOC’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 31 GW by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2046.

This development positions IOC at the forefront of sustainable energy in India, setting a precedent for large-scale green hydrogen production and utilization in the country’s refining sector.
