The Union government has informed Parliament that four ports are currently under active construction in Andhra Pradesh. The disclosure was made by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha by MP Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy.
The four ports being developed are Mulapeta Port in Srikakulam district, Machilipatnam Port in Krishna district, Ramayapatnam Port in SPSR Nellore district, and Kakinada SEZ Port in Kakinada district.
As part of its broader port modernisation drive, the Centre has undertaken several key initiatives, including mechanisation of existing berths, digital integration of logistics, capital dredging to accommodate larger vessels, construction of new terminals, and strengthening of road, rail, and waterway connectivity.
On the financial front, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has received 29 new project proposals worth ₹3,300 crore from Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, 13 projects valued at ₹2,500 crore are being supported under the Sagarmala scheme, with ₹450 crore already sanctioned.
Once operational, the four ports are projected to add 110 million tonnes of cargo handling capacity to the state and generate approximately 75,000 employment opportunities.
