Bengaluru residents are voicing increasing concerns over trucks transporting construction materials such as M-Sand, jelly stones, and cement without proper coverings. These uncovered loads are dispersing dust particles across the city, leading to air pollution and posing safety hazards, particularly for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. At a recent police-public interaction event, citizens highlighted issues like reduced visibility and heightened accident risks due to airborne debris from these trucks.
Police Commissioner B. Dayananda acknowledged the problem, noting that regulations mandating cargo coverings are often ignored. He emphasized that the police department is collaborating with the transport authority to address the issue, including considering a potential daytime truck ban. Joint Commissioner (Traffic) M.N. Anuchet reported that heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 7.5 tonnes are already restricted during peak hours, with 823 violations recorded between January 2024 and March 2025.
In response to these concerns, the Bengaluru police have issued directives mandating that all trucks transporting construction materials cover their loads with tarpaulin sheets. This measure aims to curb dust pollution and enhance road safety. Authorities have warned that stringent actions will be taken against violators to ensure cleaner and safer roads in the city.
The enforcement of these regulations is part of broader efforts to improve air quality and reduce pollution levels in Bengaluru. Residents and environmentalists hope that these measures will lead to a significant decrease in dust-related health issues and traffic accidents.
