A much-awaited infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion in Tripunithura, near Kochi, is finally progressing after years of delay. The Rs 672-crore project to widen the 13-km SN Junction–Poothotta stretch into a four-lane road has been revived, following nearly a decade of stagnation.
The Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) has completed the crucial realignment process, which now allows for immediate land acquisition. Initially introduced in the 2017 state budget, the project faced delays that exacerbated traffic congestion in this rapidly growing residential hub. According to MLA K Babu, the land acquisition process is set to begin soon.
The revised plan includes upgrades at nine critical junctions, such as Kizhakkekotta, Nadakkavu, Kannankulangara, and Udayamperoor, alongside the addition of 12 bus bays to improve traffic flow and public transport efficiency. After realignment, the required land area has increased from 12.62 hectares to 13.12 hectares.
A social impact study has been completed, with further evaluations planned for the newly added land. With Rs 450 crore already allocated from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), KRFB officials expect swift land acquisition once surveyor availability improves. Upon completion, the widened corridor will reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and bring much-needed relief to commuters and local residents.
