India’s Parvatmala Pariyojana, the national ropeway development programme launched to improve connectivity in hilly and congested regions, is progressing steadily with several projects moving forward across the country. The initiative aims to develop more than 200 ropeway projects in the coming years to provide faster, eco-friendly, and cost-effective transportation solutions, especially in areas where road and rail construction is difficult.
One of the key projects under the scheme is the Varanasi urban ropeway, which is expected to be completed by June 2026. The ropeway will connect important locations within the city, helping reduce traffic congestion and making travel more convenient for residents, tourists, and pilgrims. Once operational, the system is expected to handle a large number of passengers daily and significantly reduce travel time in one of India’s busiest religious destinations.
The Parvatmala programme is being implemented through public-private partnership models to ensure faster execution and efficient operation. Ropeways are considered a sustainable transport option as they require less land, cause minimal environmental disturbance, and offer reliable connectivity in challenging terrain.
With several projects under development in different states, the programme is expected to strengthen infrastructure, improve mobility, and boost tourism across India.
