Recently, officials at the Sathupalli and Ramagundam open‑cast mines found valuable materials like scandium and strontium in mining clay. This is a big step forward in making good use of mining waste and supporting India’s goal of becoming self‑reliant in key minerals.
These rare elements are useful in modern industries. Scandium helps to make stronger aircraft parts and lighter sports gear. Strontium is used in magnets, electronics and even medicine. Tests show that each 15 tonnes of clay gives about 1 kg of these elements. From August, the mines will start supplying them.
