Tarmac, one of the UK’s leading building materials suppliers, has outlined an ambitious plan to deploy a fleet of electric heavy-goods vehicles (eHGVs) supported by a dedicated DC fast-charging network. The initiative marks a major step toward decarbonising construction logistics across London and the South East.
As part of the rollout, Tarmac will introduce five battery-electric HGVs starting in early 2026. These electric trucks will be used to transport essential construction materials such as cement, asphalt, aggregates, and concrete blocks for major infrastructure and development projects. The company is partnering with leading truck manufacturers and charging-infrastructure specialists to ensure seamless integration of the new fleet.
To power the vehicles, Tarmac is establishing a strategically located DC charging network across key operational sites, including its Paddington concrete plant, Harper Lane asphalt plant, Linford blocks facility, and the Northfleet HGV base. The Northfleet site will feature a HyperCharger system capable of delivering up to 1 MW to a single truck or distributing the load dynamically across multiple vehicles.
This investment reinforces Tarmac’s commitment to lowering emissions, improving urban air quality, and creating a more sustainable logistics model by combining electric road transport with its existing rail freight operations. The move reflects a broader industry shift toward cleaner, more efficient heavy-duty transportation.
