In a significant move aimed at improving connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced the extension of the under-construction Coastal Road from Nariman Point in Mumbai to Virar in Palghar district. This ambitious project is expected to drastically reduce the travel time between the two points to just 35-40 minutes, offering considerable relief to daily commuters and enhancing regional access.
The extension project, which will be funded by the Japanese government, represents a major investment of Rs 54,000 crore. Fadnavis also highlighted that the tender for the Versova to Madh segment of the Coastal Road has already been issued, with work on the Madh to Uttan section set to begin in the near future.
Currently, the Coastal Road project is an eight-lane, 29.2 km expressway stretching along Mumbai’s western coast, linking Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north. The first phase, covering a 10.58 km segment from the Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, was inaugurated on March 11, 2024.
Once complete, the extended Coastal Road is expected to boost infrastructure, streamline commutes, and promote economic growth throughout the MMR, marking a transformative step for Mumbai’s urban development.
