In the financial year ending March 31, 2025, India achieved significant milestones in infrastructure development and transportation. The country constructed approximately 10,500 kilometers of highways, marking the third-highest achievement in the past five years. Additionally, toll collections reached an unprecedented Rs 60,000 crore, reflecting the highest revenue in the highway sector’s history.
Despite these accomplishments, the pace of highway construction saw a decline compared to the previous fiscal year’s 12,349 kilometers. This reduction is attributed to a slowdown in the bidding process for new highway projects, a trend that may persist in the coming years.
Indian Railways also reported record-breaking earnings of Rs 2.7 lakh crore during the same period. This growth was driven by the transportation of 1,617 million tonnes of freight and 735 crore passengers, with passenger transport experiencing a 6% increase over the previous year. The railways achieved its highest-ever production of coaches, wagons, and locomotives, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure.
