India’s First Urban Ropeway in Varanasi Begins Trial Run

Date:

It is a proud moment for India as its first urban ropeway begins trial operations in the ancient city of Varanasi. This new system marks a bold step in how people will move around busy towns. The ropeway runs over a 3.8-kilometre corridor and includes five modern stations. At each station, travelers will find spacious waiting areas and friendly facilities to make their time comfortable.

Designed as an eco-friendly solution, this project is meant to reduce pressure on busy roads, ease traffic congestion and cut pollution. It shows how clean transit can work well even in historic and crowded city spaces. Built at a cost of about ₹815 crore, the plan includes upkeep and operations for the next 15 years, showing long-term thinking and a strong commitment.

The system includes 148 gondolas, each able to carry passengers smoothly and together they can serve nearly 100,000 people every day. To ensure everyone’s safety, there are several rescue systems in place. Officials say the ropeway is a “visionary and green project” for Varanasi, representing modern transport that fits with the city’s ancient spirit.

People in Varanasi will now see their city from a new height, literally. The ropeway offers not just ease of travel, but also a view, a fresh experience and a modern way of life without harming the environment. If everything goes well in these trials, this kind of transport could soon become part of the daily routine in many towns across India, bringing speed, comfort and sustainability together.
