OpenAI Issues RFP to Build and Scale AI Manufacturing Infrastructure in the US

Date:

OpenAI has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to build and scale AI manufacturing infrastructure in the United States, marking a major step toward strengthening domestic capacity for next-generation artificial intelligence systems.

The RFP invites partners across construction, engineering, energy, data centre development, and advanced manufacturing to participate in creating large-scale facilities capable of supporting AI model training, deployment, and innovation. These facilities are expected to house high-performance computing clusters, advanced semiconductor integration, and resilient power and cooling systems required for AI at scale.

According to industry observers, the move aligns with growing efforts to localise critical AI infrastructure amid rising global competition and supply chain concerns. By expanding manufacturing and infrastructure capabilities within the US, OpenAI aims to improve reliability, security, and long-term scalability of its AI operations.

The initiative is also expected to generate significant economic impact, including job creation across construction, technology, and energy sectors. Emphasis is likely to be placed on sustainability, with energy-efficient design, renewable power integration, and advanced cooling technologies forming key components of proposed solutions.

Experts say the RFP highlights how AI development is increasingly dependent on industrial-scale infrastructure. OpenAI’s push signals a broader shift toward AI factories—purpose-built environments that combine computing, energy, and manufacturing—positioning the US as a central hub in the global AI infrastructure landscape.
