Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has requested Rs 1,300 crore from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways for crucial infrastructure upgrades, including Berth 9 redevelopment and navigational channel deepening.
The funding request comprises a Rs 750 crore proposal to modernise the 350-metre multi-cargo facility at Berth 9, currently the only non-privatised berth at the port. MPA Chairman N Vinodkumar expressed optimism about government approval, stating, “We expect the government of India to approve the proposal and provide the required funds.”
Additionally, MPA plans to submit a capital dredging proposal for the approach channel, seeking to increase depth from 14.4 metres to 19.8 metres. This enhancement will enable the port to handle larger capesize vessels, significantly improving operational capabilities.
The project promises multiple benefits: increased cargo capacity, reduced logistics costs, and substantial carbon emission reductions. The channel deepening represents a strategic investment in port infrastructure, positioning Mormugao to compete more effectively in handling larger vessels and improving overall efficiency.
These modernisation efforts align with national maritime development goals, strengthening India’s port infrastructure and enhancing trade competitiveness.
