India’s Solar Sector Shifts Focus From Scale to Long-Term Performance

Date:

India’s solar energy journey has been defined by rapid deployment and ambitious capacity targets. With the country aiming for 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, the next challenge is increasingly shifting from how quickly solar projects can be built to how reliably they can perform for decades.

Industry leaders are placing greater emphasis on the long-term durability of solar infrastructure, particularly module mounting structures that remain exposed to humidity, UV radiation, thermal stress and corrosion throughout their operating life.

The changing approach is especially important as solar projects expand into challenging environments such as saline regions, coastal areas and harsh terrains. Site-specific engineering and corrosion-resistant materials can help reduce maintenance, downtime and replacement costs while improving the overall lifecycle value of projects.

This represents a broader shift in the industry. Developers and manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond initial capital expenditure and structural optimisation, considering factors such as operating costs, asset longevity, future repowering and long-term reliability.

Advanced zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel is emerging as one solution for improving corrosion resistance and extending the life of solar structures. Industry case studies presented at the “Built to Last” conference highlighted applications across rooftop, tracker and utility-scale projects.

As India expands its renewable energy capacity, the definition of success is evolving. The focus is no longer just on building solar faster, but building solar infrastructure capable of delivering clean energy reliably for decades.
